Key dates in inlingua history

1968 inlingua is founded in Bern, Switzerland, on September 14. The founding members are a group of experienced language-school owners who have previously operated independent schools or belonged to other language organizations. They feel the need for an international network of language schools with an effective common method and materials, which is also oriented to local markets.

1971 inlingua consists of 95 language centers in Europe and has published language teaching material in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese.

1972 inlingua centers are established in North and South America and Asia.

1975 inlingua forms a Pedagogical Committee of experienced language trainers from throughout the inlingua world to supervise the inlingua teaching method, coordinate its use, and advise the organization on the production of materials. The expansion of inlingua's global network in the years since has enabled the company to choose the most capable and experienced members for this committee and recognize important regional differences in language usage.

1980s inlingua identifies the growing importance of business English and the inadequacy of available teaching material and starts work on special training materials for this market.

1989 inlingua produces a highly focused business English line called APP (Accelerated Professional Program). It is the first business language program to be developed by an international language organization. It offers a common professional course of study in every inlingua learning center around the globe. This allows the international business person to transfer from one center to another without loss of continuity insuring that the only change is the classroom and the teacher.

1991 inlingua opens its 250th center.

1999 The first book of the new generation of inlingua learning materials is published. The new series of learning materials are based on the latest developments in technology and pedagogy, yet rely on the successful inlingua method.

2005 inlingua successfully launches a blended learning tool called “inlingua Online Learning”. The tool combines the benefits of both classroom teaching and individual training on the computer and blends the two approaches.

2009 inlingua consists of more than 350 language centers in Europe, North and South America, Asia, and Africa. It offers a wide range of teaching materials in many different languages, in formats ranging from books to CD-ROMs and online tools. inlingua licensees offer language training in any language currently in use.
